'The Weird History of They're a Weird Mob or Nino Culotta's Brilliant Career'
11th May 2004
111 George Street Brisbane

They're a Weird Mob (1957) was the biggest selling Australian novel of its day -- and probably until Bryce Courtenay. Written by Irish-Australian John O'Grady it purported to be by Italian immigrant Nino Culotta. The ploy was so successful 'Nino Culotta' took over O'Grady's writing career from then on, despite O'Grady's attempts to escape him. The success of the novel also changed the face of the Australian publishing industry, opening up a whole new vein of humorous Australiana. Later the novel was turned into a film, also extremely successful and often seen to have kick-started the Australian film industry.
