Issue 1 December 2002
Ecology and Economy: An Event to Grow
Featuring displays, guest speakers and specialists from UNSW, UQ, GU, Energex,
TAFE, and an official opening by Minister for Environment, Hon Dean Wells
MA, MP, the Ecology and the Economy symposium raised constructive and innovative
possibilities for our future.
Having a healthy economy and preserving the ecology have often thought
to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. This event showed that it is possible
to be a nation that is high on both. The public exhibition and symposium
focused on what research is being done into the alternative energy industry
of the future. Displays of the Sun Shark solar car and the Pruis hybrid
car from the Queensland Government fleet, solar powered houses and buildings,
alternative energy options and a range of innovative products were on display
for the entire weekend while the low-cost and accessible talks by experts
and researchers across these fields ran all day on Saturday.
The Hon. Dean Wells, MA, MP, Minister for the Environment, opened the event
on Saturday, 21st September and stayed to hear several of the early talks
and to browse the displays. Approximately 60 people, including academics,
business and government representatives, families, students and other members
of the public joined the symposium. Many more visited the displays over
the weekend.
Talks covered subjects such as economically productive energy options,
solar powered public and private transport, house building and renovation,
sustainable energy and the future.
Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences would like to take this opportunity
to again thank its partners: Energex, Queensland Government Environmental
Protection Agency, Queensland Museum and Ionode. Without strongly committed
partnerships, such an event would not have been possible.
New QAAS Headquarters
QAAS has recently relocated to offices in National Trust House in William
Street. National Trust House is a fascinating Heritage Building that
has been under renovation for some time. Now that renovations are complete,
the Qld Dept of Public Works has been generous in not only offering us
an office space but by also providing us with office equipment and IT
support. The phones are now on, the computers and internet are installed
and we are settling in nicely. We encourage you all to visit us or contact
us.
In addition, the new Executive Officer, Jane O’Donnell will be
in the office for at least two days a week. Jane welcomes any input from
members and looks forward to meeting with you.
President’s Column
Greetings! Our new Executive Officer, Jane O’Donnell, is to be
congratulated in producing our first of what is expected to be a regular
Newsletter. We have reached the stage in our development as Queensland’s
State Academy when we are in a position to do this with Jane’s
appointment and the setting up of our own new office in Federation House,
95 William Street, Brisbane.
In 1999, a year before the Academy was launched, we raised the question
of having a city office with Mr Mal Grierson, then Deputy now Director-General
of Public Works. He suggested that a location might be available in the
former Department of Primary Industries Building in William Street, then
in the process of extensive restoration. We were able to hold a number
of our Council Meetings in the Boardroom of this building, named “Federation
House” when it was occupied by the Centenary of Federation Committee
and is now renamed “National Trust House”.
However our then Executive Officer, Lorelei Broadbent, found it more
convenient to operate the Secretariat from her home. We shared Lorelei’s
services with a number of other organisations. We were very grateful
for the fine work Lorelei performed in the early stages of the Academy’s
establishment. We record also with appreciation Dr Julie McCredden’s
contribution in acting as Executive Officer for the Economy/Ecology Event.
A fresh approach was made to Mal Grierson several months ago and he was
happy to provide us with very suitable accommodation, on very generous
terms, on the top floor of National Trust House. We share the prestigious
building with the National Trust, Wildlife Preservation Society, Disability
Council, and Integrity Commissioner. Jane O’Donnell has been very
busy setting up our new office.
This important development has been an exciting time for the Academy’s
officers and opens up a whole range of new opportunities for our future
progress. We look forward to your valuable participation in the Academy’s
work for our community.John O’Hagan
