Research
Dr Kuttainen researches in three key areas: settler colonialism and the literature of colonial modernity; scholarship of learning and teaching (especially the secondary-tertiary transition); and creative writing/life writing as a mode of engaging public audiences with complex issues in the humanities.

She has a strong interest in the special circumstances of Humanities Research in the Regions and has coordinated a symposium – The Two Cultures: The Arts and The Sciences in Dangerous Times – (held virtually, organised by the Australasian Consortium of Humanities Research Centres (ACHRC) and JCU in 2020 to examine the common assumption that there are two broad, competitive cultures operating within our universities and our society, competing for students, competing for recognition, competing for funding, and competing for the right to ‘science’ (knowledge) itself.
