  • Professor Ian Henderson is the Director of the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at The University of Queensland. Prior to becoming Director, he was the Deputy Director (Research) at IMB. Professor Henderson was previously the Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at University of Birmingham from 2015-2018.
He is a Professor of Microbial Biology who completed his Bachelor of Science (Hons) at University College Dublin, his PhD at Trinity College Dublin, and postdoctoral studies at the Centre for Vaccine Development, University of Maryland.
Professor Henderson’s research interests focus on the bacterial cell surface.  This focus is based on the philosophy that the bacterial cell surface offers a rich source of molecules, which can be utilised and adapted to treat or prevent infections. Professor Henderson’s research resulted in a treatment for patients with severe respiratory infections, by using a technique called plasmapheresis to remove damaging antibodies from the patients’ blood stream.
He has been published in journals including Cell, Science, Nature Microbiology, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Nature Communications, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Blood, Nature Structural and Molecular Biology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA.
